For possibly the first time (let us know if you know otherwise) brothers will be facing off in this year’s Emotion Bowl. Idaho Falls Senior Lineman Jesse Caudle (#75) and Skyline Sophomore Lineman Garret Caudle (#55) bring this game’s emotion to a new level. When their mother, School District 91 Director of Secondary Education, who spent 10 years as principle at Skyline, wrote me about this historic event, I had only one question: Where will YOU be sitting?

As for the game, we will have as many family members there as possible, sitting on the Idaho Falls Tigers side. This is because we chose to sit on the side representing our senior boy, Jesse. My parents, Connie and Butch McGee, are driving down from Coeur d’ Alene to see the game. My ex-husband (Travis Caudle), his parents (Jerry and Jeannie Frazell) and his uncle (Mike Stoddard) all from Idaho Falls will also be there.

I do have to say that after working at Skyline High School for 10 years (once a Grizzly – always a Grizzly), it is hard to pick the Tigers over the Grizz. As with Emotion Bowl lore, it does not matter who has the best record. The team that can handle the game mentally and not let the “emotion” get to them, will be the winning team. I am sure many of those injured Tiger players will be back this Friday! This is how the Caudle-McGee family will handle the situation…We wish for both boys to give and play 110 percent. We hope both teams play their best game. We hope that both boys have fun. We hope that it is a battle until the end! And, may the goal posts be what they deserve to be.

The game was really entertaining. Raymond was a blast to watch. Down 22-15 in the 4th, it looked as if Idaho Falls was going to have a chance to tie or take the lead as they moved the ball to the goal line, however, after Raymond went down with an ankle injury, the drive stalled and the game ended with Hillcrest escaping with a 7 point victory.

This is the second time I’ve shot a Hillcrest game this year. The injuries they suffered last week were apparent and now that I’ve seen both D93 teams, I think the Civil War is going to be a great game next week. My gut says Bonneville will take this one.

Best wishes to Dylan Raymond in his recovery. If you have a status update, let us know!

Some thoughts on the game:

Smoke is a human highlight reel. So is Joel. It seemed that one guy wasn’t enough to bring Mitchel to the ground, in fact, I have sequences where this is clear. With Martin, one guy wasn’t even going to touch him. I remember a few years ago thinking that Michael Berger had an insane ability to change direction. I think Joel is even better.

Tyson Dennert looked like like a second or third year varsity starter, not a first year. He throws the ball very well, and makes good decisions. I was on the sideline with Jerry Weber when he threw the pick in the first half, and could only determine that the ball went where he wanted it to, I believe that was more of a miscue than an errant throw. I also think he was good on his feet, and protected the ball well when things broke down. I’m VERY excited to watch him this year.

I don’t think it’s fair to judge a defense based on the first game, especially against the sniffers. The lack of size was evident last night. I look forward to the next game to see how they perform running Berger’s standard scheme.

Finally, Hillcrest’s butt sniffing offense is even less fun to photograph than it is to watch. I was still glad to be out shooting football!
